Glassboro High students are planting the seeds to success with a student-run farm stand this summer

GLASSBORO, N.J. (WPVI) – Street stands are a familiar sight for many New Jersey motorists throughout the summer.

But one in Glassboro has an educational effect.

The student-run farm stand just outside Glassboro High School teaches students the basics of business and supply and demand.

“This prepares students for customer service skills in the workplace. They do all the math in their head without a calculator. They have to display and source the products themselves,” said teacher Barb Jones.

Mark Silverstein, Superintendent of Glassboro Public Schools, says, “It’s a really innovative program that gives kids an opportunity to gain experience before they enter the workforce.”

He says even supply chain issues affecting the country’s grocery market are learning moments for these students.

“The first week they had trouble getting products. So what’s happening in the country in a macro sense is happening locally and they’ve had to adjust what they’re selling. That’s experience,” Silverstein said.

Glassboro weekly customer Charles Devuono says, “I think they’re learning how to interact with people and how to use real cash without a calculator. I think it’s great for them to deal with. I try to support them when I can. “

The stand is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until August 4th from 10am to 4pm.

It is located in front of Glassboro High School on Bowe Blvd in Glassboro, NJ.
