Google is not shutting Stadia down

Contrary to what you may have heard over the past few days, Google says it’s not shutting down its Stadia gaming service. The company made the statement after a rumor circulated earlier this week that suggested it would be shutting down the platform later this year. “Stadia will not shut down,” according to the official Stadia Twitter account in a tweet . “Rest assured that we are always working to bring more great games to the platform and to Stadia Pro.”

Some Stadia fans were convinced that Google would finally pull the plug on the service after Killed by Google’s Cody Ogden rose to fame and keeping tabs on the company’s ever-expanding graveyard, a Facebook fan group post said. According to the news, an “old colleague and friend” told the poster that Google recently held a meeting to discuss the future of Stadia – or the lack thereof. They claimed the company will shut down the platform by the end of the summer, using the same strategy it was pursuing.

At the time the only comment was Ogden, offered on the post was a . However, that wasn’t enough to stop the rumor from sending much of the Stadia community into free fall. To his credit, Google responded to the episode .

It’s not surprising that even a flimsy rumor caused an uproar in the Stadia community. Since Google, the service has been on an extended death watch. The incident highlights the unhealthy parasocial relationships people can sometimes have with technology companies like Google. “Communities that are confident in their continued existence are not responding like some of the things that have been hurled at me in public and in DMs over the past few days,” Ogden said said after the dust settled. “If the suggestion that a technology might go away touches you so deeply that it threatens you, maybe you need to reconsider your relationship with the technology?”
