WILMINGTON, Delaware (WPVI) — Things get tight in New Castle County, Delaware, when a newly discovered crate is poised to take a neighborhood back in time.
It’s unclear what’s inside a 1953 time capsule found Friday in the old Drew Education Support Center building on South College Avenue in Newark.
Christina School District officials say Whiting-Turner’s construction crews found the capsule hidden behind a brick marker as they continue to demolish the site.
The building, formerly the district’s former administrative offices, will be the site for the new Bancroft School, which will be the first new school for the area in decades.
Officials say the new school will be funded entirely by the state and is expected to cost $84 million.
It probably won’t take 1.21 gigawatts or a flash to open the capsule, but anticipation mounts to see what stories are locked inside.
The contents of the time capsule will be announced at the next Christina School District Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m. at the Bancroft School at 700 North Lombard Street in Wilmington.
Officials say all are welcome to attend.
“People have been trying to guess what might be in the mysterious box found in the Drew building for days – we’ll get the answer Tuesday night,” said Dr. Dan Shelton, Superintendent of Schools, in a press release.
If you’re unable to attend the meeting and are curious about what’s inside the pod, you can watch a live stream at www.christinak12.org/BOE-Meeting.
So you can say, “Great Scott!” the treasures of 1953, which the capsule contains from the comfort of your own home (or the flying DeLorean).
