Greenwood Park Mall mass shooting leaves 3 dead; witness kills gunman at Indiana food court, police say

GREENWOOD, Indiana — Three people were fatally shot and two injured at an Indiana mall Sunday night after a man opened fire with a rifle in a food court and an armed civilian shot him dead, police said.

The man entered Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and several rounds of ammunition and began shooting in the food court, Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison said.

A 22-year-old from nearby Bartholomew County, who was legally carrying a firearm at the mall, shot the gunman, Ison said at a news conference.

Four of those shot were women and one was a man, Ison said. He did not immediately know the exact sex or age of those killed.

He said a 12-year-old girl was among the two injured, both of whom are in stable condition.

Police seized a suspicious backpack that was in a bathroom near the food court, Ison said.

Officers went to the mall around 6:00 p.m. for reports of the shooting.

“The true hero of the day is the citizen who lawfully carried a firearm in this food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he started,” Ison said.

The mass shooting was just the last thing to unsettle Americans in 2022. Schools, churches, grocery stores and a July 4th parade in Highland Park, Illinois have become killing zones in recent months. Still, the reality of America’s staggering homicide rate is often more evident in individual deaths that rarely make the news.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and several other agencies are assisting in the investigation.

“We are disgusted by yet another type of incident like this in our country,” Indianapolis Deputy Police Chief Chris Bailey said.

Authorities said there was no threat to the area as of Sunday night.

Greenwood is a southern suburb of Indianapolis with a population of approximately 60,000. Mayor Mark Myers asked for “prayers for the victims and our first responders.”

“This tragedy goes to the heart of our community,” Myers said in a statement.

Authorities said they would provide more details on Monday.

So far in 2022, as of July 17, there have been 347 mass shootings. The Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more are injured or killed, not including the perpetrator, counted 692 mass shootings in 2021, 610 in 2020, and 417 in 2019.
