jess williams makes a big return to the long-running medical drama Grey’s anatomy. He will return as a director and guest star in the fifth episode of the show’s 19th season. The episode, which will air November 3, is titled “When I Get to the Border” and features Williams’ return as Dr. Jackson Avery. Williams has played Jackson since 2009, and over the course of 12 seasons, fans have watched him grow from an inexperienced intern to a successful plastic surgeon and eventually a loving father. Williams left Grey’s anatomy in spring 2021 just before the premiere of the eighteenth season. In Season 17, it was revealed that Jackson was moving to Boston. Towards the end of season 18, Williams made a surprise return appearance as Jackson, where he reunited with his ex April and became Dr. Meredith Gray caught up (Ellen Pompeo). At the end of season 18, Meredith noted that she and Jackson are the only remaining members of her assistant class still working at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital, saying that his departure left her “the last man standing”.
During a recent interview with E! News, Williams teased his return, saying, “I don’t want to be sniped in here, but I think there’s a very good chance there’s going to be a way Jackson shows up one way or another.” Williams also said that he interacted with the new cast of Interns who will make their debut in Season 19, noting that the five new cast members reminded him of his first season on the show: “It reminded me of coming into a crop of four Residents who had to familiarize themselves. They kind of fiddled around and figured it out, made the effort, as actors and as characters, to figure out their place in this big, intimidating space.”
Jesse Williams is best known for his role in Grey’s anatomy, but he’s also directed and starred in other shows. Most recently he was a director at ABC’s Rebel, and executive producer of the Oscar-winning 2021 film Two distant strangers. He also starred opposite Owen Wilson in Paramount+’s that year Secret headquartersand alongside Reese Witherspoon on Netflix your place or mine.
Airing for 17 years, the long-running ABC medical drama follows the daily lives of residents, residents and attending physicians who work at Seattle’s Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital. Season 19 of Grey’s anatomy will focus on a new group of interns at Gray Sloan who are meeting the challenges and pressures of saving lives while balancing their work and personal lives. The new season features a cast of five brand new interns played by Alexis Floyd, Adelaide Kane, Harry Shum Jr., Nico Terhoand Midori Francis.
