It’s incredibly impressive that a 2013 multiplayer game like GTA Online can be a hit in 2022 and exceed expectations time and time again. There’s certainly a section of fans who want the game to crash and burn, but if the current data is to be believed, the opposite seems to be true.
The recent double interest earnings call revealed:
“During this period, Grand Theft Auto Online maintained its massive viewership year-over-year, and grew by 8% and 74%, respectively, compared to Q4 of fiscal year 2020 and 2019.”
There’s no end to this iconic game, it’s easy to see why.
GTA Online is still a great success in 2022
It’s no surprise that GTA Online is doing incredibly well in 2022. The game was recently ported to PS5 and Xbox Series X | S as a standalone title, and that’s not even mentioning how PS5 players get the game for free the first three months. It’s not just a simple portal.
Rockstar Games introduced new graphics modes, better FPS, and a bunch of new vehicles related to Hao’s Special Works, along with some minor balances for Nightclubs and MC Enterprise. One controversial new addition is GTA+, but Take-Two has stated the following about the service:
“Yes, we haven’t made any news about the subscription expansion. We’re excited about how it’s rolled out so far. We’re delighted with the conversion rate. And obviously. It’s clear that consumers really enjoy the opportunity to engage with GTA Online, and they appreciate – what we’re offering through subscriptions.”
If the conversion rate is as high as the company advertises, it’s reasonable to assume that the game will be several years away from it, at least. There may be a lot of players who don’t like what the game stands for today, but that left the title with a sizable chunk of the fan base that loved the game.
Popularity on different platforms
The game is available on many different platforms. Rockstar Games doesn’t provide specific numbers for each platform, but it’s clear that GTA Online’s updates affect its popularity on Steamcharts. For example, there is a large number of players that increase drastically every time an update is available. Here are some examples:
- + 24.63% in December 2021 (Contract)
- + 27.06% in July 2021 (Tuners)
- + 39.36% in December 2020 (The Cayo Perico Heist)
- +5.67% in August 2020 (Los Santos Summer Special)
There is usually some percentage deducted right after the update happens. Predictably, top players also introduced these updates. Keep in mind that Steamcharts only shows players playing games on Steam, so it won’t include the Epic Games Store or various consoles.
There hasn’t even been a major update to GTA Online on Steam this year, and it’s still one of the most played games on the platform.
The base game is still widely downloaded across various consoles, even though it’s a 2013 game. Part of what keeps GTA Online relevant are the major updates that happen every six months. These updates often introduce some new vehicles and features for players to learn about, however, it’s worth mentioning that the game has had more frequent updates lately.
GTA Plus and its recent next-gen update breathed new life into a game that’s already hugely popular and isn’t likely to slow down anytime soon.
