“He detracts from other players” – John Barnes names 3 Manchester United stars who would have had better season without Cristiano Ronaldo in the team

Liverpool legend John Barnes has largely blamed Manchester United’s disappointing campaign this term at the feet of Cristiano Ronaldo.

In a podcast dedicated to William Hill (via Mirror), the 58-year-old accused the Portugal international of causing discord within the team.

He also stated he is confident that Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho will have a better season if the former Real Madrid player is no longer in the team. Barnes says:

“He (Ronaldo) disparages other players. (Marcus) Rashford will have a better season, (Bruno) Fernandes will have a better season, (Jadon) Sancho will have a better season. Whoever signed Ronaldo, it’s their fault.”

Cristiano Ronaldo joined Manchester United last summer and his return to Old Trafford has been celebrated by many of the club’s fans.

The 37-year-old has had a productive season on an individual level, scoring 24 goals and providing three assists in 39 games in all competitions.

United have announced the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their new permanent manager and the former Ajax man will want to start his activity at Old Trafford.

The 52-year-old is the club’s fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson and he will be hoping to make more of an impact than his predecessors.

Ten Hag recently led Ajax to glory in the Eredivisie and a similar level of success is expected from him at Manchester United.

One of the biggest talking points since the announcement of his appointment has been whether Cristiano Ronaldo will appear in his plans.

Ten Hag’s flexible play style requires common teamwork and is not built on any one player.

This can be problematic when trying to get Ronaldo in. However, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is an excellent professional and can tailor his game to do what is required.
