Former UEFA Champions League winner Jamie Carragher has praised Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino for his performance against Southampton.
Firmino, who has seen his game time limited by a combination of injuries and the Reds’ squad depth, started the game against The Saints in the Premier League. The Brazilian has excelled throughout his time on the pitch and linked well with strikers such as Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino. His feat contributed in no small part to helping the club win 2-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Firmino scored three key passes, four successful dribbles and one shot on target, and won five duels (according to Sofascore). He also managed with a tackle and interception to warm up in a superb all-round performance. Finally, the 30-year-old was brought on in the 83rd minute and was replaced by Naby Keita.
Former Liverpool centre-back Carragher, who is on specialist duty for Sky Sports, called Firmino his Man of the Match and said:
“I think he’s excellent. He came on at the weekend in the national cup final and he really wasn’t great at that point. You can understand these players sometimes don’t get the pace. But for the first 10 to 15 minutes tonight When Liverpool weren’t at their peak, he and Harvey Elliott were brilliant.”
He went on to praise the way Jurgen Klopp has used Firmino as the Brazilian was at the club before the German arrived:
“When you think what he did for this football club. He wasn’t signed by Jurgen Klopp, he was signed by Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool weren’t sure what to do with him. He arrived. from the side or does he play In the pocket, is he a Number 10? Then Jurgen Klopp gives him a Number 9.”
“In a way it’s the last place you think he’s going to play because he doesn’t have good pace and he’s not really the biggest. But what he’s done for this club, the mileage he ran and the work he did.”
“When you talk about the greats of the Jurgen Klopp era, and go through the spine of the team, he’s right at the top.”
Roberto Firmino has only played a little for Liverpool this season
Injuries and the arrival of Luis Diaz have limited Firmino’s game time for the most part this season. The game against Southampton only marked his 17th start of the season in all competitions.
Overall, he has made 33 appearances this season, scoring 11 goals and assisting four times. With two high-stakes games still going for Liverpool in the Premier League and Champions League, Firmino’s experience could prove invaluable.
