LONDON — Britain recorded its highest-ever temperature of over 104 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday as a heatwave scorched the nation and sparked fires across the capital.

If confirmed, the preliminary reading of 40.2 degrees Celsius measured at London Heathrow Airport would be the first time the country has recorded temperatures above 40 degrees, according to the country’s weather service.
