Here’s everything we know about TikTok’s new baseball sensation

If you’re a social media sports fan, chances are you’ve heard of Savannah Bananas. Simply put, they are in vogue right now. The team competes in the Coastal Plain League, a 15-club summer school baseball league featuring select baseball players from colleges across the United States. The federation was founded in 1997 and has grown in size since then. Savannah Bananas is currently using social media trends to get the world’s attention.

If this is your first time hearing about them, read on for one of the weirdest baseball stories you’ll ever hear. This is a sneak peek.

Kansas City, thank you for going Bananas with us and for the weekend of a lifetime!! We love you so much

Ever thought you’d see college baseball players perform mid-game synchronized dances? We don’t think so.

Here’s everything we know about Savannah Banana

Banana has made it a personal goal to break all the unwritten rules and rituals of baseball one by one. Instead of asking their pitcher to change the swing to get rid of the giants, the manager coordinates TikTok dances for the team to perform mid-game. They wear funky outfits like skirts and hair jackets instead of traditional uniforms. The stands on their home ground, Grayson Stadium, are yellow instead of white. And their name is Banana. Does it get any weirder than that?

Currently, the Savannah Bananas organization is not one but two teams. First, there’s a college team that originally played in the Coastal Plain League. Then there’s a professional team that plays exhibition games in an out-of-tournament round, similar to how the Harlem Globetrotters do with basketball.

Bananas adopted a bold advertising strategy and it paid off. Since their formation in 2016, they have sold more home games than any other Coastal Plain League team. Thanks to trendy videos and dances, they have accumulated more than 2.5 million TikTok followers. Add to that 86,300 Twitter followers, 424,000 Instagram followers, and 41,600 YouTube subscribers and you get a total of almost three million internet followers. This number is close to some MLB teams.

Here’s the best part: ESPN+ broadcasts the Bananas game on national television. They did so a few times. In 2021, they aired a handful of games in April and May. This season, they’re back with live and on-demand games for subscribers.

If you have ESPN+, you can watch the bananas in Savannah. The more you know.

They are everywhere and their content is well worth your time. It’s not MLB, but it’s certainly entertaining. Next time your group has a day off, try Savannah Bananas. You can only jump on Banana Boat.
