Our internet sensation beast M3GAN already lives the hype when the funny and violent horror film from Universal and Blumhouse hits theaters. But it could have been even more intense, according to the screenwriter.
Unfortunately for horror fans, M3GAN won’t amass as many corpses as Chucky the Killer Doll, but this nearly was not the case. According to writer Akela Cooper in an interview with the LA times, the M3GAN in their script was much more brutal. “No shade for Universal, I love them and I understand that when the trailer went viral, teenagers chimed in and you want them to be able to see it. There was supposed to be an unrated version at some point,” she said, adding, “I heard it was in the books. But yeah, it was a lot bloodier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the film. It wasn’t Gabriel [in Malignant, another Cooper script]-Massacre, but they killed a lot more people, including a few characters that James [Wan, producer and co-story writer] was like, ‘I like what you did to these people, but I want them to live.’ I’ve been merciless, but again, I am. My humor is extremely dark.” It’s definitely a shame they had to downgrade M3GAN; let go of our girl subsequently Come on now!
Cooper also shared that writing the character was therapeutic. “If you’re having a bad day, just write a horror script and kill some characters on paper,” she joked. “I’m glad I could help bring back funny horror that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’m reading about more horror movies that are wild, offbeat ideas that come out or are bought. And some of them are original, which is good!”
M3GAN is now in cinemas.
