Here’s Your First Look At Resident Evil 4 Remake Gameplay

Today, during the Capcom Showcase livestream, the company touched on the groundwork for its recently announced Resident Evil 4 remake — including showing a few seconds of gameplay. Admittedly, especially after the presentation’s other deep dives, it was quite disappointing.

Director Yasuhiro Anpo and Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi led the presentation, updated players on the story of RE4, and talked about how the game is both a reinterpretation of the source material and a faithful adaptation. Six years after the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3, RE4 protagonist Leon Kennedy now plays as the US President’s personal bodyguard. When the President’s daughter goes missing, Leon is sent to a remote European village to find her. As you might expect, things aren’t going well.

We then see our first look at the gameplay, and to be clear, visually it looks great. The footage takes place at the very beginning of the game when Leon arrives in the forest outside of the village. Compared to the original game, the forest is much darker and scarier. “We want to nail the feeling of loneliness and the fear of not knowing what’s ahead, even more than the original,” Hirabayashi said during the presentation. “Of course there will also be exciting fights.”

I’d be excused if you were expecting a glimpse of these thrilling battles, but unfortunately, no such glimpse came. Our look at the gameplay ends with Leon heading to a house in the middle of the forest – where Leon supposedly encounters the first Ganado, as is the case in the original RE4.

I’m more looking forward to the Resident Evil 4 remake than any other game we know right now. The original is one of my absolute favorite games. Which makes this reveal quite disappointing. I would have liked to get a real look at the game, but that wasn’t scheduled today. This is where we hope to get a better look in the future.
