Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton following the team’s win over Arsenal on Monday, May 16.
The Magpies have risen to 12th in the Premier League table and have nine wins from their previous 10 top-flight games at St. James’ Park. An own goal from Ben White and a goal from Bruno Guimaraes gave the home team all three points.
After a victory that nearly ended the Gunners’ Champions League hopes, Carragher described Joelinton as a ‘revelation’ after he started playing in central midfield.
The 25-year-old became Toon Army’s record signing in 2019 when he moved to Tyneside from Hoffenheim for £40m. However, he has struggled to get to some of the striker positions.
The Brazilian has been on the upswing since Eddie Howe moved him into midfield and even picked up the club’s ‘Player of the Year’ award 24 hours before the Arsenal clash.
Carragher said on Sky Sports (quoted by Newcastle World):
“He (Joelinton) is a revelation.”
“Put Joelinton in midfield, who would have thought that? This is a guy who is considered a failure, a £40m striker who never scored a goal. He’s gone into midfield now and he looks like a real player. “
“In the summer, Newcastle will shop and spend, maybe bring in the player, but you still think he will be the heart of this team.
“Credit to him, but credit to Eddie Howe because it’s not easy turning a striker into a midfielder.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praises players for performance against Arsenal
Toon’s side were in danger of deep relegation early in the year after a bad start to Howe’s reign. The lowest score is a 0-1 loss at home to League 1 team Cambridge United in the third round of the FA Cup.
It has been a significant change for Newcastle since then. They still have a chance outside the top 10 to enter the final game of the season.
After their well-deserved victory over the Gunners, Howe stated (according to Chronicle Live):
“It was an all-round excellent performance. We played with intensity and never gave up. We approached the game brilliantly and we made ourselves proud in the Premier League tonight. “
“The one thing we’re missing is that we haven’t beaten a team in the top six – and we beat them deservedly.”
He elaborated on today’s match:
“We wanted to press Arsenal and not let them get in the ball, but for the first time in recent performances we saw a team that could hold the ball comfortably and creatively. Arsenal played well and fought. good but they left a void for us and we exploited them.”
