Hoda Kotb spoke candidly about the unique challenges of being an older mom. The talk show host, 57, has two daughters – 5-year-old Haley and 3-year-old Hope. She opened up about the “scary” part of parenting for young kids in a recent episode of Today with Hoda & Jenna.
“[It’s] wonder how much time you have,” explained Kotb to the co-host. “…It’s a big and worrisome thought and you wonder, you do a lot of math and that’s something I don’t like to do because it’s scary.”
However, sometimes that mental math can give you peace of mind. “My mother came to visit me and I looked at her and said, ‘At least another 30 years. At least. It’s 35 for Hailey, it’s 33 for Hope. That makes me feel very satisfied. ‘”
Another difficult aspect that comes with being an older mother? Reactions from strangers.
“Sometimes people will come up and say, ‘Wait, you’re the mom?’ And it gives you this pause for a second. And your kids look around like, ‘Huh? What do you talking about? ‘ It’s a tough thing to do,” Kotb said. “I remember thinking, ‘Why does that bother me? I’m not ashamed of being my age. I am happy at my age. It was the perfect storm of my life. You two, this time, this job.”
And then, of course, there are Great aspects of having children later in life. “I see all the good things about being an older mom,” added the talk show host. “Like, I’m in my own skin, I know who I am, I have more patience and love and all that.”
For Kotb, timing is everything. She opened to STYLE TODAY in 2018 for her inspirational views on being an older parent – and we’re taking notes. “I said once to someone, can you believe I’m 52 years old and I’m having a baby? She said, on that baby’s time. ‘ Now, I’m starting to think that everything is on time. It takes a lifetime’s effort, but it happens only.”
