Spain’s national weather agency said the unusual weather conditions on the Balearic island of Ibiza are the result of the polar frost currently affecting the country.

The town of Sant Joan de Labritja on the island recorded a temperature of around -2ºC overnight.

Pictures showed the normally sunny island hit by snow, including the popular Cala Llonga beach.

It comes as temperatures dropped to as low as -2C in Mallorca, with more snow expected tonight and Sunday.

The municipality of Salines recorded the lowest temperature overnight, followed by Campos, Escorca, Lluc and Serra d’Alfàbia with -1ºC.

The Spanish weather agency Aemet has issued a yellow warning for snow and coastal phenomena in the Balearic Islands for this weekend.

Heavy snowfall is expected to cover parts of the island with some frost, particularly in the Serra de Tramuntana.

Aemet warned: “Rainfall today in the Balearic Islands, snow over 850 meters (until 8am) Mallorca: 2 Capdepera Lighthouse, 1 Escorca, Son Torrella 1 Colonia de Sant Pere.

Temperatures are expected to remain low between -2C and 5C in most parts of the island, reports El Diario de Mallorca.

However, in Palma, Sóller, Pollença, Sa Pobla and Artà they are slightly higher, between 6 and 7 °C.

Cloudy skies are said to remain on the island as some storms and small hail, especially at night, are not out of the question.

The weather warning comes just days after the first snowflakes of 2023 were recorded in the Serra de Tramuntana earlier this week.

Meteorologist Alberto Darder shared the snowy images on Twitter with the caption “The first of 2023, at 1,400 meters”.

It comes as over 40 provinces have been on alert for heavy rain, snow, ice, high winds and huge waves this week as they prepare to be hit by two storms.

Meanwhile, Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza were hit by strong winds brought on by Storm Gérard.
