Janet Jackson will take the stage for the opening night of the Hollywood Bowl’s 2023 season. On June 10, she will be joined by Ludacris and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s own Los Angeles Youth Orchestra, making the evening a prime example of what the legendary venue does best: bringing fans of all ages and walks of life together.
“It represents a generational excitement,” says LA Phil’s chief content and engagement officer, Renae Williams Niles, of the Jackson concert. “One of the things we’re really striving for is to continue creating great memories for both the artists and the audience.”
Other season highlights include Culture Club, The Beach Boys, Kool and the Gang, They Might be Giants, Air Supply, Rubén Blades, Jill Scott, Louis Tomlinson, Maggie Rogers, Michael Bolton and a 90th Birthday tribute to Quincy Jones with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Jones’ collaborator and conductor Jules Buckley.
Niles says the Bowl aims to attract a diverse audience and artists, and has amassed more than 30 Bowl debuts, including LA native conductor Ryan Bancroft, pianist Bruce Liu, Japanese composer and conductor Joe Hisaishi, Digable Planets and Portugal. The man.
“That’s a number I asked for,” says Niles of the debuts. “And I’ve asked the team to keep going, just to make sure there’s that newness and that freshness… also with different guest artists, composers and arrangers.” We want to make sure our audience always has a sense of discovery.”
LA Phil Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel celebrate its 14th Bowl season by continuing to present its five-year Pan American Music Initiative with Mexican composer Francisco Cortés-Álvarez’s “La Serpiente de Colores” and Arturo Márquez’s “Concierto de Otoño”. and a performance of the ballet “Estancia” by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera.
The Bowl foregoes its traditional staged musical in favor of additional musical offerings from stage and screen, including ‘Everybody Rise! A Sondheim Celebration” featuring the legendary composer’s beloved songs, performed by a variety of guest singers.
Film screenings with live music (always a popular Bowl staple) include 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in Concert, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. . There will also be a two-day event paying tribute to classic films from Walt Disney Animation Studio, old and new, including Snow White and Frozen.
Celebrating Disney’s influence parallels the Bowl’s place in Los Angeles, says Niles. Like Disney, “The Hollywood Bowl belongs to Los Angeles, but it’s also a gift from Los Angeles to the world,” she says.
