FILM star Sophia Loren was taken to hospital had to undergo emergency surgery after a serious fall at her home.
The 89-year-old Hollywood legend suffered multiple broken bones after the accident in the bathroom of her Swiss home on Sunday.
The horror fall left Loren with multiple fractures to his hip and a severe fracture to his thigh, which required emergency surgery.
The news was announced by her self-titled restaurant chain, which wrote on Instagram yesterday: “A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms. Loren to fracture her hip.”
“Having undergone surgery with a positive result, she must now complete a short recovery period and embark on a path to rehabilitation.”
“Fortunately everything worked out for the best and the lady will be back with us very soon.”
They added: “The entire Sophia Loren Restaurant team takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery.”
Loren’s two sons, Carlo Jr., 55, and Edoardo, 50, from her marriage to her late husband Carlo Ponti, had been at her bedside since she was admitted to the hospital.
Accordingly The Hollywood ReporterA source close to Loren said there was “cautious optimism” about the outcome of the surgery but that it would require a long period of rehabilitation.
The film icon was due to open her chain’s fourth restaurant in the Italian city of Bari on Tuesday, but all of her upcoming dates have since been cancelled.
She recently made an appearance at the Armani fashion show in Venice on September 2nd.
This year the Italian actress was named one of the biggest stars of classic Hollywood cinema.
She is one of the last surviving great icons of the Golden Age.
The 89-year-old most recently starred in the 2020 Netflix film “The Life Ahead,” directed by her son Edoardo.
She received a David di Donatello Award for Best Actress in Film.
