The Biden administration needs to know that it does not have the authority to unilaterally cancel half a trillion dollars in student debt, but it may have calculated that no one can prove the violation necessary for a legal challenge. Well maybe someone can.

An Indiana borrower filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday to block the write-off of the president’s student loan. He makes strong arguments that he is harmed by the loan cancellation and that it is illegal. Federal courts only hear cases and controversies. As a threshold matter, the plaintiffs must prove that they have suffered specific and specific damage.
