How DoorDash facilitates a major food bank delivery service in King County

The King County program provides free weekly and biweekly groceries to community members in need with the help of DoorDash drivers.

KING DISTRICT, Wash. — King County is home to the nation’s largest delivery food bank, and it’s made possible by a popular food delivery app.

The program, called United Way Home Grocery Delivery, provides free weekly and biweekly groceries to community members in need. The program uses DoorDash drivers to deliver food bank groceries to King County residents who cannot get to the nearest food bank.

In August 2022, the program reached a major milestone, surpassing 400,000 deliveries.

“(For) people with a fixed income, it’s tough,” said Carole, a caterer who is a mother of five and a grandmother of 10. “It’s money that I don’t need to spend. Getting food is a godsend.

DoorDash partnered with King County’s United Way in July 2020. However, a national program called “Project Dash” began nationwide in 2018.

“We recognize that there are people who often go to food banks who have lost their transportation because of job loss or they are really worried about getting sick, and in some cases getting sick and dying.” United Way King County said CEO Gordon McHenry Jr. about its decision to partner with DoorDash.

In Washington State, about 70% of grocery delivery recipients are people of color. University of Washington analysis shows that Project Dash participants are more likely to have children than those standing in line at a traditional food bank.

Bryan Rodriguez, DoorDash driver who regularly helps United Way Home Grocery Delivery, commented: “We need more happy people these days, especially with the pandemic and inflation. “Everything is too expensive. We need people to not have to worry about putting food on their plates. If I can make money from it and also support a member of the community, why not?”

If you are interested in the program, all you need to do is fill out the online interest form and then King County United Way will contact you. You must live in King County and cannot go to the nearest food bank.

KING 5’s annual Family Group Harvest campaign to benefit Northwest Harvest is underway. The goal this year is to raise 21 million meals.
