“How is this legal”, “This dude has 50 players to choose from” – France fans fume at Didier Deschamps for naming 2 players in starting line-up against Croatia

France meet Croatia in the UEFA Nations League on June 6 but Les Bleus fans are confused over Didier Deschamps’ squad selection.

The France coach has left with Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard at right-back and Juventus’ Adrien Rabiot in midfield.

The inclusion of these two has drawn the ire of fans, who are less than pleased to see the duo starting XI against Croatia.

It’s been a difficult season for Rabiot at Juventus, who continues to struggle somewhat for form in Turin. He made 45 appearances for Juve last season and provided two assists.

He has been linked with a departure from the old lady, with Premier League club Newcastle United reportedly interested (per JuveFC).

Meanwhile, Parvard remains a regular at Bayern, making 35 appearances and providing two assists. But rising talents like RB Leipzig right-back Nordi Mukiele and RC Lens’ Jonathan Clauss are threatening his place in the France squad.

Here are some reactions from Twitter to Deschamps’ decision to start the duo against Croatia:

The talent available to Didier Deschamps is growing all the time, with France showing great depth in pretty much every position. It’s a big reason why so many are touting them as favorites for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

They have players like Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan fighting for the starting spot as goalkeepers.

Lucas Digne from Aston Villa, Lucas Hernandez from Bayern, Theo Hernandez from Milan as well as Pavard and Clauss fight for the starting places as full-backs.

The French’s centre-back includes defender Jules Kounde from Sevilla, Presnel Kimpembe from Paris Saint-Germain, Raphael Varane from Manchester United and Dayot Upamecano from Bayern.

Their midfield is just as daunting with the likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Real Madrid target Aurelien Tchouameni and current star Eduardo Camavinga.

In attack, they have a fantastic four with PSG’s Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid star Karim Benzema, Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.

Throw in the likes of Boubacar Kamara, Kingsley Coman and Wissam Ben Yedder and it’s clear why France will cause problems in Qatar.

But the UEFA Nations League gives Deschamps a chance to tinker with his squad ahead of the World Cup. This has given fringe players like Ben Yedder and rising stars like Matteo Guendouzi a chance to shine.
