At age 21, Ja’Marr Chase signed a four-year, $30.8 million rookie contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, along with a $19.8 million signing bonus. Before football, Chase worked at a snowball stand in his home state of Louisiana. “I really don’t get paid. I just do it for the fun of it,” Chase said. “I was devastated, man. I won’t lie. I have nothing. The first thing I bought with my own money were some Reeboks by Allen Iverson. “
Luckily for Chase, as his bankroll grew, so did his shoe collection. The soccer star dropped $50,000 in his first paycheck on clothes and shoes. “I have some Off-White G Nikes, Trophy Room 5s. I have some really limited edition kicks,” says Chase. “It’s just something I’ve always wanted so I had to go get it.”
He went on to spend $50,000 on jewelry, $20,000 on a rookie dinner, and $300,000 on a car. The rest went to the family. In fact, the first thing Chase bought after signing the contract was a car for his mother. That’s about 65k, says Chase. “Get her a car ASAP. It’s like a midnight black with a Mazzi red interior. The star gave an extra $15,000 to her siblings. “I ended up getting 15K each so they could really put some aside and spend some,” explains Chase.
His total spending comes to $631k – the rest goes straight into savings. “Just put it away, it’s sure to be a good day. You know family and friends. Chase said. “Saving your money is a better way than spending it. You don’t know how much you’re losing when you’re spending it.”
