How much did Ryan Reynolds pay for Wrexham?

Wrexham are expected to seal their return to the EFL as the Welsh club need just one more win to secure the National League title.

After teetering on the brink of promotion last year, Phil Parkinson’s side are likely to return to the second tier for the first time in 15 years next season.

This is the club’s second full season since being taken over by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The couple chronicle their ownership of the club in a documentary (Welcome to Wrexham) and have revived the oldest football club in Wales.

Here’s a timeline of the couple’s possessions to date:

November 2020: Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney take over Wrexham AFC. Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) members overwhelmingly vote in favor of the acquisition – 98.6 per cent of those opposed to the offer.

February 2021: The acquisition agreement has officially been concluded. Humphrey Ker is appointed as the club’s executive director and £50,000 is immediately invested in the women’s football department.

March 2021: Fleur Robinson is named CEO and is leaving her role at Burton Albion.

May 2021: Architects will be hired to oversee the refurbishment of the Racecourse Ground before work begins in summer 2021. Wrexham finishes eighth in the National League and misses the play-offs.

July 2021: Former Charlton, Bradford, Bolton and Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson is brought on and longtime assistant Steve Parkin is also brought on board. Paul Mullin, last season’s top scorer in the second tier, makes a surprise move to Wrexham.

September and October 2021: The refurbished WREXRENT stand will reopen while the racetrack course will be relocated. Reynolds and McElhenney attend their first game since becoming owners, watching a 3-2 loss to Maidenhead.

May 2022: Wrexham suffers double disappointment. After finishing second in the league, Grimsby Town knocked them out of the National League play-offs while Bromley won the FA Trophy final 1-0 at Wembley.

August 2022: As Wrexham begins its second full season under its Hollywood ownership, the first series of Welcome to Wrexham will be released on FX and Hulu in the US, followed by a release on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland.

December 2022: Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are granted freedom from Wrexham by the City Council for their work promoting the city.

January 2023: The Welsh club are the only National League team to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup, leading Sheffield United to a replay before being eliminated from the competition.

March 2023: Former England goalkeeper Ben Foster comes out of retirement to sign for the club after Rob Lainton suffered a knee ligament injury.

April 10, 2023: Wrexham celebrate a crucial and dramatic 3-2 win over Notts County, who started the day level on points at the top of the National League table. Foster saves an injury time penalty to seal a win that puts Wrexham on pole to move up.

April 18, 2023: A 3-0 win over Yeovil means Wrexham broke the record for most points in a National League season, leaving the club with just one win left to secure the title and automatic promotion to the EFL.
