What is the salary of an architect in the UK?

However, the average salary can be influenced by the place of work.

The highest salary for an architect is in Stevenage where the average salary is £54,344 per year.

That’s £13,009 more than the national average.

However if you work in Manchester the average wage is £38,055 a year, £3,280 less than the average.

The UK government website states that an architect’s starting salary is typically £30,000, while an experienced architect can earn £60,000.

How can I become an architect?

The training to become an architect usually lasts seven years – five years of study and two years of practice.

Some of the most important qualities you will need if you want to pursue this career path include analytical thinking, design skills, knowledge of construction and the use of computers and software packages.

You can become an architect by:

If you decide to take the university route, you will need:

  • To study one of the recognized degrees architects Registration Authority (ARB)
  • one year of practical work experience
  • another two-year full-time course such as BArch, Diploma or MArch.
  • one year of practical training
  • a final aptitude test

You will also need to create a portfolio for college interviews.

This must include hand drawn sketches, photos and models.

If you decide to do an apprenticeship, you will usually spend 48 months doing a mix of work and study.

You acquire an architecture certificate or an architecture diploma.

What qualifications do I need to become an architect?
