How social media is reacting to Brittney Griner’s release

WNBA star Brittney Griner is free after months in prison in Russia on drug charges.

“I was talking to Brittney Griner earlier.” President Biden tweeted Thursday morning. “She’s safe. She’s on an airplane. She’s on her way home.”

Many others took to social media to express their feelings about the development.

“Grateful for the long overdue release of Brittney Griner from Russian custody today,” Ex-President Barack Obama tweeted. “Kudos to @POTUS and its administration for the difficult diplomatic work required to make this possible. We look forward to having Brittney back home.”

While many have expressed relief that Griner is coming home safely, some complained about the deal that was struck for her freedom. The US is freeing notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout in a one-for-one prisoner swap that does not include former US Marine Paul Whelan, who remains incarcerated in Russia on espionage charges.

“We haven’t forgotten Paul Whelan,” Biden said from the White House. “We will continue to negotiate Paul’s release in good faith.”

Here are some of the social media reactions to Griner’s release:
