How to Change the Default Folder in Finder on a Mac

Every time you launch a new window in Finder, it goes to the Recents page. Here’s how to change that.

The Finder icon is permanently on the left edge of your Mac’s Dock. When you click on it, by default it opens Recently shows all files you have downloaded or saved recently.

If you normally open Finder to access any other folder, like Downloads or Documents, you can easily make that folder the default instead. Then, whenever you click the Finder icon, it opens that folder instead of the Recents page, saving you a click.

Use Finder Options to Change Default Folder

Here’s how to change the default folder that opens when you launch Finder or open a new Finder window:

  1. Click Seeker icon and then press Cmd + Comma (,) to open options. You can also click on the word Seeker from the top menu bar and select Interests.
  2. Under Shared Click the drop-down menu below New Finder window displays.
  3. Choose a suggested folder like Desktop, Documentsor iCloud Drive. To choose something else, click Otherselect the relevant folder then click Choose.

From now on, whenever you open a new Finder window, it will always open the folder you selected instead of the Recents folder. This is just one of many tips that you may want to use as you get started with Finder.

For many Mac users, it’s a hassle to just click the Finder icon to be taken to the Recents page, before navigating to the folder you actually want. Thankfully with the above trick, you can jump directly to your favorite folder and save a few clicks in the process.
