How to Delete Albums in the Photos App on a Mac

If you’ve created too many photo albums on your Mac, it’s easy to delete them at a later date. And you won’t lose any photos doing so.

The Photos app comes pre-installed on any Mac running OS X Yosemite (released 2014) or later. This macOS Photos app is similar to the iOS Photos app on iPhone and iPad, giving you handy editing and management features like albums. If you have several albums in your Mac’s Photos app, you can quickly delete the ones you don’t need to avoid clutter.

This short tutorial will show you exactly how to delete albums from the Photos app on your Mac.

Control-Click to delete Photo Albums on your Mac

Here are the steps to delete photo albums from your Mac on macOS Monterey and all other recent versions of macOS:

  1. Open Picture application. You can do so from Launchpad, Dock, or by pressing Cmd + Space and search for Photos.
  2. Click My Album. If you don’t see My Albums, move your mouse pointer over Album in the sidebar and click arrow appear.
  3. Select the album you want to delete and Control-click up there.
  4. Choose Delete Album and then click Delete confirm.

Besides the above steps, you can also Control-click on the album in the Photos sidebar and select Delete Album > Delete.

What happens when you delete albums from photos?

When you delete an album inside your Mac’s Photos app, only the album is deleted, not the photos or videos within it. Those images and videos will remain in your main photo library or other albums of which they are part.

If you use iCloud Photos, deleting an album on your Mac will also delete it from other devices synced with the same Apple ID. The same goes if you delete an album from your iPhone or iPad.

If you delete photos and videos, they will be moved to Recently deleted , from which you can restore them within 30 days. However, this is also not the case with albums. After you delete an album, the album is permanently deleted.
