The 149th edition of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs took on a somber tone when the favorite Forte was dropped from racing on Saturday morning.
Owned by Vitaminwater co-founder Mike Repole, the three-year-old had won five straight races and was the 3-1 favorite of the morning line. The odds were 4-1 before his scratch on Saturday morning.
Forte became the fifth horse to scratch from the Derby. Three horses were scratched on Thursday. Santa Anita Derby winner Practical Move was pulled out of the race because trainer Tim Yakteen had a fever.
When he removed Continuar, the stallion’s trainer, Yoshito Yahagi, said, “I feel like he wasn’t able to reach the peak fitness required for a race as tough as the Kentucky Derby. Lord Miles was scratched after trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. caused two horses to die at Churchill Downs earlier in the week. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and Board of Stewards have suspended Joseph Jr. indefinitely.
Skinner became the fourth scratch, with the two-year-old also having a fever. The five scratch leaves the Derby field with 18 horses.
Cyclone Mischief, Mandarin Hero and King Russell from the eligible list will replace the scratches.
Last year, Rich Strike won the Greatest Two Minutes in Sports in one of the biggest upsets in the derby’s turbulent history.

Current odds for the 2023 Kentucky Derby put Forte, a horse trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Irad Ortiz, at 9-2 (was 5-1). Not far behind are bluegrass stakes winner Tapit Trice, 5-1 (formerly 6-1) and Arkansas Derby champion Angel of Empire, 5-1 (formerly 8-1).
Four horses were removed from the list: Skinner, Practical Move, Lord Miles and Continuar.
Churchill Downs is grappling with a minor uproar over the recent death of four horses, sparking safety concerns. The venue said: “We have full confidence in our race surfaces and have been reassured by our riders and riders that they do too.”
