Although not nearly as scary as coral, it’s still filled with ghosts and ghouls galore, all beautifully rendered. There are even some great musical sequences that stand out. They use both Kat’s taste in music, which she has held onto as a way to stay in touch with her parents, and one particular song about raising the dead, which is a real joy. Just as the story focuses on bringing the dead to life, the use of stop motion is itself a form of magic. Get ready for the roller coaster ride of Halloween on steroids Wendel and Wild by watching these films from creators Henry Selick and Jordan Peele:
coral (2009): This beautifully rendered nightmare fuel is Henry Selick’s latest stop motion animated film and is based on the novella by another fantasy horror legend, Neil Gaimann. Coraline (Dakota Fanning) is an 11-year-old girl with attitude who ends up in an alternate world where her busy parents have been replaced by creepy doppelgangers with black buttons over their eyes. Initially smitten by the happiness and constant attention of her alternate mother and father, Coraline discovers the dark secrets of this other world and must return to her true home before she has buttons sewn in her eyes.
The nightmare before Christmas (1993): Selick brings to life a wildly imaginative world called Halloweentown, the place responsible for all Halloween preparations and home to a skeleton man named Jack Skellington. Ambitious and longing for something better, Jack finds the perfect opportunity to reinvent himself when he discovers another city responsible for the merrier and more famous celebration of Christmas. Jack hatches a diabolical plan to kidnap and replace Santa Claus, the role of his life for which he is completely and hilariously unfit. Renowned Author Tim Burton invented the story and characters for this Halloween/Christmas classic.
Go out (2017): Peele’s groundbreaking feature film directorial debut established his unique blend of social commentary and horror. In this racially charged film, a young black man (Daniel Kaluya) meets his white girlfriend’s parents and begins to realize that their seemingly warm and friendly family has sinister plans that he must get out of. Peele fans rejoice Wendel and Wild to do justice to the Peele brand and deal with both true horrors and the real monsters that live among us.
