Hulu Original ‘Rosaline’ introduces Romeo’s ex-girlfriend

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Shakespeare’s timeless and tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet is shaken up.

Now we hear it from the point of view of Romeo’s dumped ex, Rosaline, the woman Romeo claims to love before he falls in love with Juliet.

I spoke to the cast of the Hulu original, which debuts today, and this retelling has been adapted into comedy.

In “Rosaline” we ask: Why are you Romeo’s ex?

The film stars Kaitlyn Dever in the title role of Rosaline, Julia’s cousin.

She’s also the film’s executive producer and tells me, what better way could I get to know the story of the unhappy lovers than his scathing ex-lover?

“She’s fighting for what she really wants and she’s really committed to it,” says Dever. “I really admire that about her and I think she’s definitely discovering a lot about herself and how she was wrong in so many ways in this film.”

Minnie Driver plays Sister Janet and tells me this by retelling a story we haven’t seen before.

“This is definitely a very smart, very funny story retelling with a fantastic twist,” says Driver.

Here Shakespeare’s classic source material meets modern life and jargon.

“I think it’s refreshing,” says Isabela Merced, who plays Julia. “I think it’s unique.”

Kyle Allen plays Romeo. What does he think of Rosaline trying to get back in?

“It really wasn’t worth her time,” he laughs.

Or was it?

“You embark on a journey with unexpected twists and storylines,” laughs Sean Teale, who plays a new character called “Dario.”

Rosaline will stream on Hulu on October 14th.
