I asked to split the check on vacation in the south of France and learned my lesson – my server took it the wrong way

A restaurant-goer has revealed that a request to split the bill in a foreign country went horribly wrong.
During a holiday meal in the south of France, a waiter took her request a little too literally.
Rosaria Sarnacchiaro (@rosarrrria) filmed himself having dinner in one Video on tik tok.
She sat in front of a bowl of pasta, cheese and freshly cut baguettes.
“Tip for a visit to the south of France,” says the text. “Don’t ask to split the bill.”
In the next clip, the bill arrived in an unexpected state – torn in half.

The video stunned viewers, who offered suggestions on how to dine with a friend without asking the waiter to split the bill.
“The craziest thing here is trying to split a 35 tab,” wrote one. “Oh my God. Is Venmo outdated?”
“Surely your friend can pay for you and next time it will be at your expense,” added another.
“Doesn’t anyone have banking apps they can use to pay their half to whoever put it on their card?” a third commented.
A viewer, who also visited the south of France, claimed that he cashed half of a bill with no problem.
“They did that for us at most restaurants,” the commenter wrote. “I don’t know where you’re going.”
A service industry expert agreed with the French waiter’s decision to tear the bill in half.
“As someone who works in the hospitality industry, I can tell we hate splitting bills,” the viewer said.
The video comes as part of a trend for influencers to share their culture shocks while on vacation.
With August in full swing and summer coming to an end, many people are sharing their personal travel stories on social media.
