I Don’t Donate to Politicians, but I Will to Liz Cheney

I’m a little philanthropist. I donate modest amounts to animal shelters, conservation, children’s hospitals, my local public library, the Simon Wiesenthal Foundation, and several other organizations and institutions. I don’t donate anything to universities lest they think I’m encouraging them to stray from their true mission—although I’ve considered giving $5,000 to Northwestern University, where I’ve taught for 30 years, and the money exclusively to spend for Jewish purposes for the football team.

I have never given money to politicians or political parties. But I’m about to send a $200 check to Liz Cheney for their convention campaign in Wyoming. Ms. Cheney, who is more than 20 points behind the Trump-backed candidate in the polls Harriet HagemannShe appears all but guaranteed to lose her congressional seat in the August 16 primary. She says she was unable to campaign openly because credible death threats are believed to have been made by ardent Trump supporters. The Republican Party in her home state has failed her. Not only did she support Ms. Hageman, but she flatly refused to recognize Ms. Cheney as a Republican. I Don’t Donate to Politicians, but I Will to Liz Cheney
