I really fancy our chances of landing a massive treble on day two of Doncaster, spearheaded by Coltrane

WE are lining up for the Cup in Doncaster this afternoon.

And so it is with our own stable legend COLTRANE (3.00), who is back to defend his Group 2 Doncaster Cup crown.

Sun Racing columnist Balding says Coltrane is a good thing with Donny

He has been reliable as usual this season and after a few near misses it was great to get back in front in the last game in York.

He was so strong in the Lonsdale Cup and was probably at the lead earlier than ideal, but he fought well and beat Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami.

Coltrane has incredible physique and came out of this race in good shape.

It’s a small but high quality field, with Trueshan and Broome as opponents, while Sweet William – who has a lot to like in our odds – is interesting as a young player.

We have to deal with a penalty, which is not ideal, but you can set your time according to Coltrane – he will be there at the finish.

I would say we have three really big chances today.

With the Flying Childers we unleash another of our big weapons, and it’s something of a recovery mission for FLORA OF BERMUDA (2.25).

I had a strong idea that she was heading into the Lowther at York and she did well throughout the race but faded quite quickly just before the last 16.

Nothing has come to light since, but she was extremely impressive in her last start over five furlongs on soft ground at Goodwood.

She’s running in the same conditions today so I’m hoping she can put her York slip behind her.

We start with LASTING LOVE (1.15) with the filly virgin and she is a horse that we really like.

She’s a big girl and was bred to improve with time and distance, so this seven-eighths-of-a-mile journey isn’t ideal.

But at home she can be a little eager so it’s worth a try and she needs to get some experience. She is definitely one for the future.

GUSHING GOLD (1.50) won a big pot in York last time and is in great form at home, but the likelihood of a soft ground is a concern.

However, we are not so worried about THE GOAT (3.35) as he raced through the mud with great superiority at Glorious Goodwood.

He was charged 12lb for this and found the ground a bit lively for him last time out at Melrose at York.

In hindsight, perhaps he should have stayed home, but today’s conditions will suit him.
