I rent out my spare room on Airbnb & it pays for a 3-month holiday to Spain each year

A mother earns £900 a month renting out her guest room and she uses the money to live in Spain for months.

Suzanne Noble, 61, began listing her home in Kilburn, west London, on Airbnb five years ago to supplement her income.

Suzanne told Sun Online Travel: “It started five years ago when my eldest son was pacing back and forth after graduating from university.

“I just started a new business and knew I wouldn’t have much income, so I booked my spare room on Airbnb.”

Since two bedrooms in her three-bed house were unoccupied, Suzanne rented one out to a lodger in addition to her Airbnb listing.

Solo travelers can book a private room stay for £35, while two guests pay £50 for their stay.

She said: “I’m trying to make £900 a month from the guest room.”

With the extra money, Suzanne rents out a property in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, for three months a year.

She said: “[Airbnb] definitely helped supplement my income and helps cover my rent a bit more while I’m in Spain.”

Friends and family have told Suzanne that she might charge travelers more for an overnight stay in London.

Despite encouragement from her loved ones, Suzanne prefers to keep her expenses low to dampen expectations.

Holidaymakers staying with Suzanne are not allowed to cook in the kitchen, but they can make a cup of coffee.

This is because the mother of two didn’t want strangers hanging around while she spent the evening cooking.

She added: “For most people I’m a cheap hotel, but some guests have treated me like a concierge. They asked me where to go in London and what to do in the city.

“For a few years, I felt like a housekeeper in my own home, taking care of people and changing the sheets every day.”

Over the years, Suzanne has welcomed hundreds of well-meaning travelers through her doors and only had three horrible guest experiences.

Suzanne added: “There was a guy who wanted me to fill his prescription because he got gout during his visit. I had to run to the pharmacy to hunt down his prescription.”

“There was an Irish woman who got very drunk and did a play for my son. She urinated on the bathroom floor and burned a cigarette hole in the carpet – during the break she never came out of the room.

“Finally, there was a guy who slept with the door wide open, lying on the covers with just his boxers on.”

Despite these horror stories, Suzanne will continue to rent out her room for the foreseeable future.

She said, “It’s a great form of passive income and it’s mostly really nice people.”

Guests can book Suzanne’s guest rooms on Airbnb from £35 per night.
