I tried supermarket own-brand Cornettos – the winner tastes better, is half the price and it’s not Aldi

WHEN the sun comes out, the first thing most of us look for is a cool ice cream.

Cornettos are probably the closest you can get to Mr Whippy in a van, but they can be quite expensive.

I have tried supermarket private label Cornettos from all major supermarkets

The cheapest we found for the Wall’s ice cream dessert were six packs for £3 in Asda – or 50p each – but they can cost as much as £3.50 in some stores.

Luckily for the sweet tooth among us, almost every supermarket has its own bargain version of this popular dish.

Also, the real thing is actually at least 20ml smaller than the fake we tested, so you’ll make more money anyway.

I tested the clones to see if the clones were any good.

I gave each cone a 10 for taste and price – here are the results.

Cornetto

  • £3 a pack
  • Six per pack
  • 50p an ice cream
Original Cornettos cost £3 for a box of 6 from Asda

You really can’t go wrong with an original Cornetto, the vanilla ice cream combination with a chestnut topping is a classic.

It tastes just pleasant enough and the chocolate nib at the bottom of the cone is the perfect consistency, maybe too much chopped nuts for my taste above.

But I cannot ignore the high price of the dishes, especially since they are quite small compared to other cheaper options.

Asda’s offer is good value for money, with its own twist on the classic ice cream with chocolate and vanilla twists.

Although I was quite disappointed when the hat fell out of my hand while I was tucking it in. Not ideal and a bit messy.

Overall it is pleasant enough and a relatively good price.

Tesco also opted for a chocolate roll for its desert cone, with chocolate sauce flowing over the ice cream.

However the taste is not as good as the others, the chocolate is a bit pale – a bit more like cooked chocolate than sweet.

The same goes for the choccy nib at the bottom of the cone.

Tesco’s is a bit more expensive, the highest price for a 4-person package we’ve tried.

Aldi finished second with a score of 18/20

I’m a huge fan of Aldi’s private-label Giannis ice cream, the low-calorie ice cream is my personal favorite, so I went in with high hopes for the ice cream cone.

I was not disappointed – the cream was soft and light, like the consistency of Mr Whippy.

Aldi also has a combination of both chocolate and vanilla in its cone and the flavors of the two blend well together.

The nib inside the cone is also delicious, and it’s the cheapest nib we’ve tested for a pack of four.

Iceland tastes just like the real thing, if not better.

The dish itself is similar to Aldi and is like a soft dish, and also very greasy.

I felt it had just the right amount of chopped nuts on top, not too overpowering but also added crunch.

The deciding factor though is certainly price. For a pack of six, it costs just £1.50 – half the price of Cornettos of the same size.

It makes them perfect for families on a tight budget, if you ask me.

Overall it’s a winner for me.

Morrisons in a similar style to the other clones, also swirling both chocolate and vanilla together in a cone.

I’m not too fond of the taste of chocolate ice cream but it was improved by adding chocolate sauce in the middle.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that the choccy nib in the cone is much taller than the others, which means there’s a bit less cream to stuff in.

In terms of price, it matches Asda for a pack of four, not the highest but not the cheapest either.

We also tested our own brand Soleros in the supermarket and the winner was half the price of the real thing.

Also, we’ve tried instant latte packages including Starbucks and Nescafe – and a 95p supermarket dupe is still better.
