I was kicked off my flight because I’m allergic to nuts – and they tried to charge me £700 to rebook

A PASSENGER was left stunned after being thrown off a flight because of her nut allergy – only for the airline to try to charge her £700 to rebook.

Hanna Olsen, a South London jewelery designer, was traveling from Manchester to Cape Town on Turkish Airlines when she was asked to check-in at Istanbul Airport for her connecting flight.

The 36-year-old told the Mirror that she had asked to read the list of ingredients on the inflight meal packaging.

While her allergy is not life-threatening, it can cause Hanna to become ill, itchy, and uncomfortable.

Following her request, Hanna said members of the cabin crew asked her to sign a piece of paper and agree that the airline would not be responsible if anything happened to her.

She said: “They said I had to sign the form to say I’ll take responsibility if something happens – it was a blank piece of paper, not a form.”

Ms Olsen says she told the flight attendants she wouldn’t eat if her allergy was a problem, but 10 minutes later the flight attendants came back and told Hanna the pilot was refusing to take her.

She said: “I was really upset, it was embarrassing and dehumanizing.”

Hanna was then hauled off the plane and stranded 2,000 miles from home with no choice but to pay for an airport hotel room out of her own pocket.

She has claimed Turkish Airlines wanted to charge her £700 to rebook her on a flight the next day – she was also asked to sign a second piece of paper.

Hanna said she was eventually rebooked on a flight for free, but this incident will change the way Hanna travels in the future.

She said: “I will never tell the crews about my allergy again as it was very traumatising.

A spokeswoman for Turkish Airlines said: “We have raised the issue with our customer service department and we have been informed that our passenger has already done so [given] personal feedback via our feedback form.”

“Following this, our authorized entities assessed the case in all aspects in accordance with our investigation policy, took all necessary actions and informed our passenger as a result of the conclusion.”

Sun Online Travel has reached out to Turkish Airlines for comment.

Hanna is not the only passenger who struggled with an allergy on her flight – one passenger was served nuts three times despite being allergic.

Meanwhile, passenger Laura Merry was forced to hide in the plane’s bathroom during her flight after cabin crew insisted on serving almonds despite being made aware of her deadly nut allergy.
