Ian Wright reacts to Arsenal potentially signing ‘world class’ target

Ian Wright says it would be “brilliant” if Arsenal secured the transfer of long-term target Mykhailo Mudryk during the January transfer window, as he told Premier League Productions (26/12/22 at 22:20).

The Highbury legend pointed out Mikel Arteta has to delve into the market to try and find a replacement for the injured Gabriel Jesus, but he warned the player in question has yet to ‘add’ to Arsenal’s squad if Jesus returns .

While Eddie Nketiah scored in Arsenal’s 3-1 Boxing Day win over West Ham United, they can’t last that many months with the Englishman at the helm when Jesus is indeed out for several months.

Many names have been brought up but one player seemingly keen on the move is rising Shakhtar Donetsk star Mudryk.

Ian Wright spoke about his former club’s upcoming transfer window and Mudryk’s name was thrown at him.

“I think so (Arsenal needs to strengthen from a position of power),” Wright said.

On Mudryk’s mention: “It would be great. God forbid anything happens to Eddie Nketiah and we’re in serious trouble. We’d probably have to put Martinelli in there, but that would take away from the left.

“With Arsenal and what they are doing now, the path they are on, they need to get another striker because you have to compete with Liverpool, Man City and Man United. All of them.

“You have to make sure you can bring someone on the team to complement the team, not just someone you bring in to replace Jesus because he’s injured. Someone to complement the team when Jesus is there because Arsenal can’t afford that. We can no longer afford to get the transfers wrong.

“So I think we can probably try to get someone in January if it’s Mudryk then brilliant.”

Whilst also speaking to Premier League Productions, former England international Owen Hargreaves called Mudryk a “world-class” option for those in north London.

The problem Arsenal have here is that Mudryk is inexperienced and at 21, the Champions League stage is the biggest arena he has played in.

Also, Mudryk prefers to play from the left rather than through the middle, which is necessary.

Anyhow, it seems like the Ukraine star wants the move, it’s just a matter of whether Arsenal will come up with the cash for the versatile striker.
