Ian Wright urges Chelsea to sign a replacement for injury-prone superstar

Former Arsenal ace Ian Wright has advised Chelsea to buy a replacement for their injury-prone star midfielder N’Golo Kante this summer.

Kante has made numerous first-class performances for the west London team since joining Stamford Bridge from Leicester City in 2016. However, the Frenchman has had a hard time keeping fit lately.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner missed 16 games in the 2021/21 season due to various injuries (groin, knee, unknown) and the coronavirus (via Transfermarkt).

The UK approved a deal to sell Chelsea FC, previously owned by Roman Abramovich, to a group led by the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Todd Boehly on.wsj.com/3lJWxWy

Wright believes Chelsea will need to replace the injury-prone star sooner rather than later but is unsure how things will work under new owner Todd Boehly. Speaking to Premier League Productions (via The Express), the former striker said:

“What will happen to Chelsea next season? Without an owner who used to write off just £100m a year. Will the new owner be able to do this? Because that’s how they could do what they were doing.”

He added:

“How will this happen now? They need defenders, they will need defenders. Kante is starting to hurt a little bit so they have to replace him. What’s wrong with [Romelu] Lukaku?”

He added that off-field turmoil has affected the team, which became apparent in the final weeks of the season.

Wright added:

“It’s just crazy what’s happening at Chelsea. I can’t really say for sure. But the form is gone, you see some of the games they had, they were so bad in the games.

The UK government has given the green light for the sale of the club to Boehly after rigorous verification that current owner Roman Abramovich would not receive a penny from it. The new owners are expected to be present when the new campaign officially begins in August.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel gets £200m in his first transfer window under new ownership

The Telegraph (via The Daily Mail) has claimed Todd Boehly’s consortium will give Tuchel a £200million war chest for the summer. The fee includes the funds that the club would generate from player sales.

“Todd Boehly is ready to give Thomas Tuchel £200million for this summer. Looks huge but it’s so small… considering how many signings Chelsea have to replace to replace the departures.

Considering the Blues will lose Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger (both free agents), they could first use the funds to bolster their defenses.
