“If I say what I think I am suspended six months” – Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hits out at referee for destroying game against Tottenham

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tried to contain his anger at referee Paul Tierney following his performance in the Gunners’ 3-0 defeat in the north London derby.

Tottenham Hotspur were awarded a penalty in the 21st minute when Cedric Soares appeared to dash Son Heung-Min across the area while trying to defend a cross. Harry Kane then took a direct free-kick past Aaron Ramsdale to open the scoring.

The Gunners’ evening took a turn for the worse 12 minutes later when defender Rob Holding was sent off successively for two unwarranted yellow cards.

Tottenham took advantage of the opportunity right after Kane headed from a corner when the first half led 2-0. Son scored shortly after the break to complete the pass and send Spurs right behind Arsenal.

After the final whistle, Arteta was clearly furious with the referee, who the Spaniard claimed had killed the game.

When asked about Tierney’s decision-making, Arteta told Sky Sports (according to BBC Sport):

“If I say what I think, I’ll be suspended for six months. I don’t lie so I don’t want to say what I think.”

“I can’t say what I think.”

He continued:

“I’m not happy with my players. I’m proud of my players. I want the referee to come in front of the camera and explain his decisions. It’s a shame for such a beautiful game. So was destroyed today.”

“The decision has been made. We cannot change it. The referee has to make the decision in football.

Arteta claims Arsenal are focused on their next game after defeat at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

The Gunners have blown away the chance to secure their spot in the top four for the first time since the 2015/16 season. Now they find themselves just one point away from their major rivals.

When Arteta was asked how he would pick up his players ahead of his trip to Newcastle on Monday night, the 40-year-old told BBC Sport:

“I’ve done it. This game is history and all our focus is on Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle. I told them I’m very proud of them and if we do what we do, I’ll tell them. did in the first half hour here, we’ll be fine against Newcastle.”

“I worry a lot about today. I am really worried about today but I am not worried about the performance of the players.”

“I want to be where we all deserve to be.”
