I’m a dog expert – why letting them run with a stick in their mouth is a recipe for disaster

A DOG expert has revealed why letting your dog run around with a stick in his mouth might not be the best idea.

While it’s pretty cute, if your pooch likes to run around the park with a stick, it can be a recipe for disaster, according to Top Dog Tips’ Samantha Randall.

The expert explained that you probably “shouldn’t even throw a stick at your dog.”

It might seem strange or even cruel not to let your pet play with them when you go for a walk, but it’s for the best, says Samantha.

“Hundreds of dogs are treated for stick impalement each year.

“We don’t let kids walk around with lollipops in their mouths for a reason, and the same care should be taken with your dog,” she explained.

The pet pro even revealed that if your furry friend trips or falls with a stick in his mouth, a fatal accident could result.

She continued, “If you throw a stick for your dog and it lands in the ground, they could actually impale themselves on that stick.”

In order to avoid serious injuries, it is best to avoid playing with sticks altogether.

The risk is simply not worth it, says the animal expert.

But that doesn’t mean you can play fetch with your pooch.

“Just use something else, a ball, rope or something, to play with your dog,” she said.

She added: “Don’t feel bad about doing some of these things with your pet.

“These are all common activities that many pet owners do with their puppies.”

The pro confessed to doing the same before she knew how bad it could be.
