I’m a flight expert and you can save hundreds by booking ‘hacker fares’

Tom Church is a travel expert and co-founder of the money saving community LatestDeals.co.uk, where a network of bargain hunters share the best deals they can find.

However, he also offered a money-saving tip, with passengers mixing and matching both airlines and airports to try and cut costs.

For example, some destinations are accessible from multiple London airports with multiple different airlines, so it’s worth checking which routes are the cheapest for both the outward and return journeys.

It might be cheaper to fly from London Gatwick with easyJet, but returning to Stansted with Ryanair is the cheapest option on the way back.

Tom said: “Don’t be afraid to mix and match airlines.

“This is called a ‘hacker fare’ and essentially means you fly out on one airline and return on another.

“That way you can get the cheapest fare out and back, so it can be cheaper than buying a return flight from an airline.

“Most comparison sites will show you these mix-and-match fares, but keep an eye on the airports.

“For example, you could depart from London Gatwick and return to London Heathrow.”

Tom also recommends flexibility when booking and says it will show people the cheapest time to travel.

He added: “If you can be flexible with your dates, you should be able to get better deals on your flights.

“When I search on Idealo Flights, Google Flights, Kayak, Skyscanner or Momondo, I always choose the flexible option.

“This way you can see when the cheapest time to travel is and just planning your trip around these dates can save you hundreds of pounds.

“These changes in how I look for flights have meant I can afford to travel more often and now I take three times more vacations than most just because I can find cheap flights.”

Meanwhile, another travel expert is following these three steps to keep his vacation costs down.
