I’m a mechanic – here’s how far you can really drive on an empty tank…crucial detail helps you work it out

A MECHANIC revealed just how far you can really go on an empty tank, with one crucial detail that may help you find out for yourself.
The expert from the car maintenance company your mechanichas created a table containing a rule of thumb for a number of popular car models.
The gauge shows how much fuel is left in the car when the fuel warning light comes on and how far you can get with it.
In order to get to the nearest gas station and not stop at the side of the road, it is important to know how far your car can go.
It is not recommended to completely empty the tank as this may damage the engine. However, the warning light should give you enough time to get to a place to refuel.
In fact, some models can go over 100 miles on their fuel supply, but most only make it between 30 and 60 miles.
The Nissan Altima came out on top on the data, with a maximum range of 114 miles from the three gallons of gasoline remaining after the low fuel indicator illuminates.
The Chrysler 200 finished second with 108 points, while the Nissan Versa completed the top three with 104 points.
At the lower end, the Chevrolet Silverado finished last with a maximum of 25 miles, followed by the Hyundai Elantra, Kia Optima and Kia Soul with 30 each.
However, if your car isn’t on the list, you can find out for yourself if you know some key information.
All you have to do is find the fuel level that is triggering your warning light and then divide it by the fuel economy value in miles per gallon, which can be found in your owner’s manual.
While this isn’t an accurate indication of distance, as driving style and even weather can affect fuel economy, it does give a rough indication of how long you can expect your engine to last before it gives up the ghost.
This comes after another mechanic shared an important service tip that could save hybrid drivers thousands and prevent a driving disaster.
Meanwhile, a car expert explained how driving the latest Porsche convinced him electric cars weren’t the future.
