I’m a money-saving mum – the exact sale dates to stock up on baby essentials at the supermarkets this month

WHETHER you already have a baby or have just discovered you are pregnant, it is an incredibly exciting time.
But with so much to think about – from clothes and diapers to cribs and strollers – it can also get terrifyingly expensive.

That’s why it’s so important to have your finger on the pulse when it comes to when baby sales are likely to start at your favorite supermarket.
Here, money-saving mum-of-two and founder of money-saving app My VIP Rewards, Maddy Alexander-Grout, 38, gives a glimpse of when to expect top stores to start selling this month.
timing is everything
All large supermarkets reduce their assortment at this time of year.
Keeping an eye on the estimated launch date, Maddy says: “January is a great time to look at baby sales!
“The Morrisons sale starts on January 9th – the Tesco baby sale is then also expected.
“Boots is expected to be January 11th and Aldi online January 8th and in stores January 12th.
“Asda’s started on January 5th, Lidl’s is expected on January 19th and Sainsbury’s is expected to start on January 24th.
“The Matalan clothing sale is now up, with everything under £5.
“But remember, just because it’s on sale doesn’t mean you have to buy your newborn.
“Find out what you need, have a plan and stick to it.”

Stock up on essentials
If you’re not sure what to stock up on, think of essential items you’ll always need and buy them while they’re on sale.
Maddy says: “If you’re pregnant or have just given birth, stock up on baby food as most baby food has a shelf life of 18 to 24 months unopened.
“Very rarely can you buy things like Calpol, which usually has a year’s shelf life, but I buy supermarket own brand – it’s almost half the price, tastes better and is a little less sticky!

“When the supermarket own brand diapers are on sale, stock up on those too and you can never have enough wipes either!
“They last forever and you use them for literally everything including makeup removal, wiping restaurant tables, cleaning sticky hands, cleaning walls and my favorite – removing hair dye from my face.”
“It’s also a great time to shop for bottles and sippy cups – but make sure your child likes the brand before committing and buying 20 as kids can be picky!
“Also stock up on baby shampoo and bubble bath when they’re on sale.
“They have a shelf life of 24 months, so it’s worth buying in bulk.”

push it
The sale is also a good time to shop for staples and larger items too.

Maddy says: “Check out the sale for strollers – but also look at places like Facebook Marketplace where you can find strollers in great condition, sometimes new if people win them in competitions and then resell them.”
“Baby monitors and baby sleep devices can be expensive, so sales are a great time to grab a bargain.”
