I’m a savvy shopper… the M&S bargains I swear by – it’s so much cheaper than you think
IF you want to cut costs and save money, Marks & Spencer isn’t necessarily the first place most people would shop at.
Known for their high-end goods and the catchphrase “this isn’t just food, this is M&S food” means many of us assume that shopping there is out of our price range.
But actually, you might be surprised.
Savvy shopper and M&S fan Polly Arrowsmith says: “Marks & Spencer’s often thinks it’s expensive, and for some goods that’s true.
“But you get what you pay for and they always have good deals too.”
Here she shares the affordable items she always buys from M&S…
In fact, if you need to go to the store for a pint of milk or a loaf of bread, Marks & Spencer is often the same price as other supermarkets for your everyday staples.
Polly says: “Items like eggs, milk and bread can be priced the same as Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.”
For example, four pints of M&S Select Farms British Semi Skimmed Milk cost £1.65 – the same price as the Sainsbury’s equivalent.
A loaf of M&S Super Soft White Thick Sliced Bread is in their ‘Super Savers’ range and costs 85p, while a Sainsbury’s loaf is the same and a Tesco loaf is a fraction cheaper at 80p.
If you’re looking for fancy dining without the price of a restaurant, M&S have some great deals on quality meals – just keep an eye out for what’s on offer in your local store and online.
Polly says: “You can buy a main, side, starter and dessert from their Gastropub range for £12 and they are very high quality dishes.
“There’s also the wok deal – choose carbs, protein, veggies and gravy for £7.
“At the moment there are also two pizzas and two sides for £12 aimed at families.
“The Valentine’s deal is always great too – a starter, main, side, dessert, Prosecco and chocolates for £20.”
Their Indian, Thai or Chinese meal packs cost £12 for a full meal for two – a fraction of the cost of an actual takeaway.
If you fancy a pizza night, you can choose from toppings including triple-spicy pepperoni pizza, brick-oven cheese and ham, and vegan three-cheese from Plant Kitchen.
Side dish options include chicken munchies, garlic dough balls, and stuffed potato skins.

Be sure to check out the M&S sales.
Polly says: “Today, for example, Percy Pig bath bombs are £1.99, less than £9.60.
“You can also buy Percy Pig cards, wrapping paper and gift tags for just 15p from Islington M&S.
“Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Halloween and Christmas also come with special Percy Pig products, so associated merchandise is always 50 percent off right after.”
You can get most of these M&S deals online at Ocado, plus additional deals not available in-store, and it can really pay off to keep an eye on deals, sales and clearance items.
Polly says: “Last week, for example, I got a 300g bag of M&S cashews for £3.33, saving me 35 per cent, with a use-by date of August 2023.
“I also got a salmon side for £12.50 instead of £25 and the week before I got a beef rib for £15 instead of £65 on sale.”
“Before Christmas I got M&S Shelf Life Prepared Vegetables at 50% off.
You can also pick up great clothes on sale, both online and in store.
