An experienced mechanic has uncovered the most common repair scam that can cost drivers hundreds of pounds.

Scotty Kilmer has been a mechanic for over 55 years – and has a hugely popular TikTok account where he warns motorists about potential repair scams.

on his speak @scottykilmeroofficial He claims that when a mechanic offers you a free oil change, they often try to charge you for unnecessary repairs or “sell” the job.

He said, “I’m going to talk about one of the biggest scams in the auto repair industry, the free oil change.”

“So you buy a new car and they say, oh, you get a free oil change for the next four years — not as free as you might think.”

“They’ll try to sell you the kitchen sink – all sorts of things.”

“I’ve seen people pay £5-600 or more for extra services whilst claiming their free oil change.

“They just want to get you in and sell you stuff. Even in places that only do oil changes, they always try to offer extras.”

The mechanic has more than 756,000 followers on TikTok and more than 7 million likes for his videos.

This particular video went viral on social media and has more than 196,000 views – and 268 comments on TikTok.

And users were quick to comment below.

One said: “Lol just say no to everything but oil and filters.”

Another said: “Just because they’re trying to upsell you doesn’t mean you have to buy it.”

A third stressed: “I always change my oil myself; do not trust anyone.”
