Ubisoft’s Immortals: Fenyx Rising was a hit when it came out in 2020, and now it looks like a sequel reportedly based on “Polynesian culture” is on the way.
Immortals: Fenyx Rising was a massive open-world title centered around Greek mythology, when the young Fenyx took advice from the wise gods and, in some cases, even fought against them. Its beautiful, sprawling world has been hugely popular and it seems a sequel may be on the way.
Leaks are pretty much to be expected in the modern gaming era, and one of the driving forces behind the practice is industry insider Jeff Grubb.
He was responsible for a number of leaks and rumors, many of which turned out to be correct. Grubb has now released another potential new game in the pipeline, and it’s new content in Ubisoft’s Immortals universe.
Immortals: Fenyx Rising sequel on the way?
Information and insider gaming gossip are regularly discussed on the weekly Jeff Grubb’s Game Mess Podcast.
In the last installment of the show, Grubb spoke about Ubisoft developing another game as a follow-up to Immortals: Fenyx Rising as the Zelda: Breath of the Wild-inspired title performs very well.
“Ubisoft Quebec’s sequel to Immortal: Fenyx Rising is not really a sequel, it’s more of a spin-off, that’s what the game’s production name is Oxygen, you’re a hero, boy or girl. because this time Ubisoft is based on the Hawaiian-Polynesian culture.”
Grubb continued: “[There] will still be a god teller, they will still try to be visually stylized but less of a copy of Breath of the Wild. she [Ubisoft] Talk about a visual reboot, it’s in early pre-production, I’ve seen some concept art and it’s coming maybe 2025.”
Grubb clarifies that he’s reading this information from a source and doesn’t believe it’s one of the aborted Ubisoft projects, following in the footsteps of Splinter Cell VR, Ghost Recon Frontline, and others.
As we mentioned earlier, the biggest criticism of Immortals: Fenyx Rising has been the game’s identity, or lack thereof. Few games have dealt with Polynesian territory before, so it will be interesting to see how Ubisoft incorporates the culture as well as its greatest gods: Kane, Kanaloa, Hikule’o and more.
It borrowed quite heavily from Breath of the Wild, which isn’t a bad decision considering how high that game’s reputation is, and when a reported sequel is trying to reinvent itself, the franchise could finally get some individuality.
