In China, Young Women Become Accidental Symbols of Defiance

Late on November 27, editor Cao Zhixin, about to turn 26, joined a protest near Beijing’s embassy compound with a few of her friends. It was a momentary decision that inadvertently made them the symbol of the most public display of defiance in a generation—as well as a strong state response.

The rally is seen as a vigil for the victims of a deadly fire at an apartment building in western China that has been locked down because of Covid-19. Ms. Cao and her friends brought flowers and candles and joined the crowd in singing the traditional Chinese lament “Goodbye”.
