IND vs SA 2022: “A lot of people have said that he is not a natural leader”

Former South African cricketer Shaun Pollock feels KL Rahul is slowly gaining a foothold as a leader. He hinted the 30-year-old was growing in confidence and expects to do well in the leadership role.

The talismanic run scorer has received his fair share of criticism for not being proactive with his decisions on the field. Rahul has not had much success as captain, losing all three ODIs to South Africa earlier this year. He also lost the only Test he conducted against the Proteas at Wanderers Stadium.

Pollock pointed out on Cricbuzz how many fans and critics believe Rahul may not be a natural leader. However, he noted that if the player is able to lead from the front, it becomes easier for the player.

Shaun Pollock explained:

“A lot of people in the Indian setup who know Indian cricket really well have said that KL Rahul is a somewhat reluctant captain and not a natural leader. But I think he finds his way and comes to himself. When you lead with your performance from the front, that makes the rest easy.”

Former Indian player Ajay Jadeja opined that KL Rahul’s skills give him an edge over others. He explained:

“KL Rahul has the ability and is way ahead of the others. He is very moody and we have seen him in different moods on different occasions. He was always very calm.”

Rahul has yet another chance to prove his skills as leaders in the forthcoming five-game T20I series against South Africa, which begins on 9 June. He was named skipper for the white ball series against the Proteas due to the lack of regulars captain Rohit Sharma.

“I always tell young players to try to copy people like KL Rahul” – Michael Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan also praised Rahul. He mentioned that the right-hander can do well in all formats.

The cricketer-turned-commentator added that he often advises younger players to learn from the likes of Rahul.

He explained:

“There’s something about KL when he gets into that rhythm and form. You can get past this type of game and move on to 50-over cricket and Test match cricket. He just plays the pure way and I always tell young players to try and copy players like KL Rahul because that foundation gives you the opportunity to play all formats of the game successfully.”

Meanwhile, Rahul emerged as a key performer for his side Lucknow Super Giants in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL 2022). He led by example, notching 616 carries from 15 appearances, including two centuries and four fifties.

The Karnataka cricketer is hoping to keep the momentum going as India shifts focus to international cricket with the T20 World Cup looming in a few months. IND vs SA 2022: “A lot of people have said that he is not a natural leader”
