Singer India.Arie praised Megan Thee Stallion and Janelle Monáe’s performances at Essence Festival.
A video went viral of Megan inviting 20 fans onstage to twerk while Monáe shows her chest on stage during her performance.
“The question is what CONTEXT is. Humanity does EVERYTHING. But DOES ALL ONE STAGE belong?” India.Arie wrote in the comments section. “No, is everything for CHILDREN? No, is everything for EVERY BODY? So when we, as a culture, make something like this mainstream, it shows a lack of discretion [and] Discernment.”
“Just as many people have the right to want our MAINSTREAM International export – our music – to present us in a respectful light,” she continued. “I want to put this on record: this isn’t going to age well and that’s my problem.” I LOVE Janelle AND Meg, as I love all of us – AND I don’t like this moment. Don’t bother arguing about me lol I know and I do it. I’ve been doing THIS for 25 years. So. Read, think about it or not.” Other fans took both sides of the argument in the comments section.
After the backlash, India.Arie tried to explain her thoughts to her fans.
“I hate defending simple logic so I’ll just say this,” she wrote in part. “It’s not a problem for any of my sisters. PERIOD. I am a long-time affirmative voice of old school for women. MY RECORD SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. I LOVE humanity even if the whole thing is crap LOL!
“I’m just saying that context matters. Discuss it if you want lol… but I said what I said. And WHY did I say it? Because just like EVERYONE else, I have a right to my opinion.”
