Inflation affecting hair salons | fox43.com

The owner of a hair salon in Schuylkill Haven tells how he faces new challenges as prices rise.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pennsylvania — Jennifer Hower has owned Shearlogix in Schuylkill Haven for nearly four years. She says it’s the most expensive thing running a salon has ever been.

The everyday products her salon uses are not only more expensive, they’re also harder to find.

“Now it is difficult to order things. I spend time on the phone calling a supplier, the nearest supplier, trying to find whatever I need to keep these girls busy, making a living, and paying their bills. ‘ Hower said.

Shearlogix isn’t the only salon struggling. Shenandoah hair salon Two West says it goes to the dollar store for hair wraps because the typical vendor is either too expensive or out of stock.

In response to inflated pricing, Shearlogix has increased prices by 10 percent, which Hower has delayed for two and a half years despite the pandemic.

“I hate raising prices. It’s not my favorite thing to do, but I want the girls to be able to afford the gas in their cars to get to work. So we just had to go for it.” She added.

How said she also raised prices to take care of her employees and help them make ends meet with the increased cost of living.

“The girls are so talented and put so much into their work that I don’t want them to belittle their work, but we also want to be good to people,” How said.

While she feels guilty about rising prices, Hower hopes her loyal clients will keep coming to her salon.

“I hope people understand why we have to do it and respect us for doing it and waiting a really long time to do it. It’s been two and a half years,” she said.
