Inside the hotel where you can sleep in two countries at once

YOU can visit two countries in one night by staying in a very unique hotel.

Hotel Arbez is located on the border between France and Switzerland – some of the rooms cross both countries.

Also known as L’Arbézie, guests can choose from a range of “binational” rooms such as: B. Room nine.

The reason for its odd location lies in the Treaty of Dappes, signed in 1862, when both countries allowed a “small swap of territories,” according to CNN, that gave the French a nearby road.

The hotel opened in 1921, half in France and half in Switzerland.

Travel writer Miquel Ros stayed in one of the rooms across the border and said it meant guests “slept with their heads in Switzerland and their legs in France”.

He wrote: “Visible from the window and only a few meters away were the two border posts, the Swiss on the right, the French a little further down on the left, with the hotel occupying a triangular plot of land wedged between the two.”

There have been a number of diplomatic incidents in the hotel’s history.

For example, a group of men were fined by a Swiss customs officer after being caught playing French-made cards on the Swiss side of the resort.

During World War II, after the occupation of France, German troops were allowed to cross over to the French side but could not cross over to the Swiss side.

It was also used as a neutral bargaining chip between France and Algeria in the 1960s, leading to its independence.

It was even investigated in 2002 after 9/11 when it was feared that Al Qaeda had used the hotel to cross the border without being detected.

During Covid the hotel encountered problems after imposing border controls which differed between France and Switzerland.

You can now book a room for less than £100 a night – just make sure you have your passport with you.

It’s not the only weird place where two boundaries are crossed.

The Haskell Free Library is located in both the United States and Canada on the Vermont-Stanstead border in Quebec.

And a city called Baarle-Nassau and Baarle-Hertog straddles the border between Belgium and the Netherlands.

Here are some weird hotels you can visit in the UK too.
